Tianjin Low Sideboard
Tianjin, circa 1900
With its solid frames, square cornered style and heavy brass hardware, this is a great example of the type of furniture produced around the city of Tianjin on China's east coast. It is in its original condition, with the old black lacquer finish still largely intact and the old hardware still in place. The top is divided into three sections, with four shallow drawers below. The two top outers sections each have a removable centre post - more stylistic than practical. The central section is accessed via a removable panel with a simple locking mechanism - complete with the original key that moves the lock up and down. The overall look is very distinctive of Tianjin furniture and the cabinet's proportions and height today make it ideal as an unusual TV stand.
