Three Drawer Chinese Elm Console
Shanxi, circa 1880
This simple three drawer console is in elm wood and originates from Shanxi in central China. The elegant legs taper down to shaped horse hoof feet and each drawer has a ring handle. The table would once have been finished in a dark reddish brown lacquer, which is still visible on the legs but elsewhere has worn away to reveal the paler wood, with its rich grain and character. Designed originally as a small work desk, it would also work well today as a console table.
