Three Drawer Antique Carved Shanxi Coffer
Shanxi, circa 1920
This beautiful chest is in elm wood, a material readily available for furniture making around Shanxi province where it was produced around a hundred years ago. It would originally have been used as a coffer to store money and valuables, with most likely a single drawer at the top removed to allow access to the space below. The three drawers here have been added more recently, each drawer front beautifully carved in a floral pattern and finished in a worn blue that contrasts with the surrounding dark frames. The bottom apron and side spandrels are also carved, with the spandrels tapering down to the feet to give a 'butterfly' front profile. Perfect as a bedroom chest or for general storage.
