Three Drawer Carved Coffer Table
Shaanxi, circa 1820
This stunning table is from Shaanxi province in north central China and is made from elm wood. The style is very distinctive of the region, with metal studded frames around the drawers and a thick extended top surface over beaded legs. The paintings of flowers on the three drawers are all original, the reds, greens and blues now worn but still visible. The hardware, including the three simple drawer handles, are all original. The table would have served as a storage coffer to hold money, jewellery or other valuables, with the drawers lockable using the elongated handles.
