Tapered Elm Shanxi Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1880
This cabinet is from Shanxi province and is in a pure style that was seen throughout China but particularly in the north. The doors slot directly into frames above and below, whilst the rounded legs taper up slightly and fit into the thick extended top. The doors are fitted with rounded frames with a removable centre post between them. The effect is a very fluid, simple look that is very pleasing to the eye. The cabinet has the original fixed shelf inside, holding two shallow drawers.
