Tall Cabinet with Carved Doors
Shanxi, circa 1860
This tall cabinet is still in its original dark finish and simple door hardware. The style is quite typical of Shanxi furniture, with panels set within rounded frames. The doors are mounted on internal, dowel hinges and each features a circular floral motif in carved relief, whilst similar carvings decorate the small rectangular panels above and to the sides. The cabinet's bottom apron shows a carved geometric pattern that incorporates buddhist swastikas - a symbol for prosperity. A fixed shelf inside incorporates two small drawers. Now quite a rare piece and in wonderfully original condition, this would work well as a drinks cabinet for for strorage in a reception or dining room.
