Square Elm Cabinet, Antique Chinese
Shanxi, circa 1880
This lovely cabinet is in elm, the wide patterned grain of the wood particularly striking on the doors and outer panels. The handles on the three drawers, with their unusually shaped backplates, are original, whilst the semi-circular plates on the doors are replacements. The colour is also old - a pale lacquer that beautifully highlights the wood grain. The doors are set centrally on wooden dowels rather than on metal hinges, which gives a more minimalist, simple feel. They give access to the full width of the cabinet on the inside, with a single shelf. A very handsome piece that would be great as a dining room sideboard or for general storage.
