Rustic Elm Storage Console
Henan, circa 1900
This old table is a bit of a rarity, with the two doors fitted with large ring handles and opening to a single, open storage section underneath an extended top surface. Made from thick, chunky elm wood, the table is from Henan province in central China, in a simple, rustic style. The top of the table has a lovely patina, showing signs of wear and use over the years but with an attractive, wide wood grain. The ends of the tenon joints that secure the legs into the table top are visible - as is common in Chinese carpentry - and give an indication of the ingenious joinery used in the table's construction.
