Small Rustic Oriental Bench
Shanxi, circa 1910
This simple bench is in a style seen throughout China for centuries and still used today for both indoor and outdoor seating. It has a thick plank top that extends over tapered legs, with curved spandrels sitting either side of each leg. The legs themselves slot directly into the stool seat and are fixed with mortise and tenon joints, the ends of the tenons visible on the surface of the seat. Originally in a dark lacquer, the finish has worn over the years to give a lovely patina, the chunky elm wood full of character.
