Small Gansu Chest
Gansu, circa 1880
This little trunk is from Gansu in western China, simple in style with just a moulded base that gives it a robust, solid look. It is in a completely original condition, still with the original red lacquer finish, black around the base, and simple brass clasp. The box is made from Paulownia - a very strong wood that is common in much of China. Most likely used originally to hold documents or other personal effects when travelling, it would work well today as an unusual little side table.
