Small Elm Wine Table
Shanxi, circa 1900
Narrow in proportion, this little table would fit into many smaller spaces as a console or display table. It is in a classic 'An' style, with rounded, recessed legs fitting through a simple apron and spandrels on each side into an overhanging top surface. The style is instantly recognisable as Chinese, with this type of table shown in woodblock prints illustrating Chinese literature from the Ming dynasty and continued to be seen today. Like much of the better quality furniture produced in Shanxi province, the table is in elm wood, beautifully finished in a dark wood stain and varnish. The minimalist, simple style highlights the character of the wood and makes this table a versatile little console for any interior.
