Small Elm Chinese Kang Table
Shanxi, circa 1820
This little table, with a waisted top and mini cabriole legs, was used on the 'kang' platform that was heated from underneath and acted as the main everyday living space in a Chinese home in Shanxi province. Used for serving food or drink and possibly for taking opium, it has evidence of its earlier life in the form of a number of scorch marks on the surface. It is made from elm and has a lovely colour and patina particularly on the table top.
