Single Drawer Elm Table, Antique Chinese
Shanxi, circa 1850
The plank top of this simple little side table, which extends over the single drawer and legs, still shows the old flat head nails that fix the ends in place. The metal drawer handle is also original. The table is in elm wood and originates from Shanxi province in central China. Interestingly it sill shows the Chinese characters on the left and right front legs that would have been written when it was made. The characters on the left give the date of production and those on the right give the name of the workshop that produced it, making it far easier to date accurately than most Chinese furniture.
