Sideboard with Hand Painted Landscapes
Jilin, circa 1850
This colourful sideboard is from Jilin province in northeast China. It is in a wonderful palette of reds, greens, oranges and blues, the once vibrant colours now softened to more muted tones. The carved spandrels at each side taper down to the feet from the extended top, giving a fluid, elegant look to an otherwise quite simple design. The paintings on the doors are quite unusual, showing boats in and around a walled harbour set with pagodas, with a village in the background approached by a long bridge from the right hand side. The whole scene is set within red borders, decorated with paintings of flowers. Further flowers are shown on the four upper drawers. The colours used are similar to those seen on furniture from Mongolia, which neighbours Jilin to the west. With a removable shelf inside each compartment this would make a beautiful dining buffet, with plenty of storage space inside. A stunning piece with original paintings, it will bring colour and interest to any space.
