Sideboard with Dragon Carvings
Shanxi, circa 1850
This two door cabinet is from Shanxi province in central China and made from elm wood. The dark lacquer finish is old, now slightly worn in parts to the paler wood beneath. The thick frames are rounded and the door panels set within further rounded frames that are mounted directly into the cabinet on traditional wooden dowel hinges. The simple hardware on the doors is also old. What gives this piece its character are the wonderful carved spandrels at either side, beautifully detailed representations of dragons that taper down towards the base of the cabinet. With a single removable shelf inside, it would work well as a dining room sideboard or for general storage.
