Round Cornered Elm Cabinet
Shandong, circa 1920
This simple cabinet is in a stripped back style that shows off the lovely, natural elm wood. The cabinet is from Shandong province in northeast China and is in a classic 'round cornered' style that was common for centuries throughout the country. The door panels are set within rounded frames that fit directly into the top surface and bottom frame. The rounded sides also fit into the top and extend down to create the cabinet's legs in an ingenious design that does away with the need for metal hinges. The only contrasting element to a very pure look is the dark brass hardware on the doors. The central post between the doors is removable - a largely decorative feature that was common in later Chinese furniture. Inside is a single fixed shelf integrating two shallow drawers.
