Shanxi Three Drawer Temple Table
Shanxi, circa 1860
This stunning three drawer table originates from Shanxi province. The dark brown lacquer has worn over the years to leave a reddish hue. The carving on the drawers is a particularly nice example of this style, with the two small deep drawers depicting 'foo dogs' in carved relief - guardians to deter any unwanted pairs of hands from accessing the drawers. The shallower, full length drawer has a nice scrolling design, also in carved relief. A metal ring set on the frame between the upper drawers remains in place - once allowing these to be secured. Ideal today as a console in a hallway with useful storage space for keys, papers and other knick knacks.
