Shanxi Tall Medicine Chest
Shanxi, circa 1820
Dating from the early 19th century and still with its original finish and hardware, this wonderful medicine chest is from the central Chinese province of Shanxi and is one of the best examples we have come across. The twenty-one drawers are each divided into sections, with the old labels on the front describing the original contents of herbs and remedies that were once held in each section. There are further Chinese characters on the top and side frames of the chest. The dark lacquer is now worn and crackled, adding distinctive character. Original apothecary chests are now rarely available and this one is in superb condition.
