Shanxi Storage Chest
Shanxi, circa 1880
Chests of drawers like this one are an unusual find as traditionally the Chinese would store clothes and other personal items in cabinets or trunks. This one is from Shanxi province in central China and made from elm wood. The dark finish is original and, while there is some wear on the top and drawer fronts, it has stood the test of time well. Seven drawers are each fitted with a simple ring handle and, in the reverse of most western chests of drawers, become shallower from top to bottom. The thick legs and frames are rounded, with the legs fitting directly into the slightly overhanging top surface.
