Shanxi Painted Antique Buffet
Shanxi, circa 1920
This lovely three door cabinet is still in its old finish, with the original paintings of flowers on the doors. Once brightly coloured, the lacquer and paintings has severely worn over the cabinet's lifetime to leave a soft, simple palette of green, pink and white. The black lacquer on the chunky surrounding frames has also worn to reveal the pine wood underneath. When it was made the cabinet would have served as a storage container for flour or grain, accessed through a lid in the top. This has been sealed and instead the three fixed panels at the front have been converted into doors, making the unit ideal as a sideboard with plenty of original character.
