Shanxi Opera Trunk
Shanxi, circa 1900
This striking trunk would once have belonged to an opera troupe in Shanxi province, used to hold their costumes and props as they travelled the region. The main paintings depict two sets of characters in elegant robes and headdress, scenes from one of the operas that the troupe would have performed. At either side are colourful paintings of vases and flowers. The trunk is fitted with a black metal clasp on the lid, allowing it to be secured. With plenty of storage inside, the trunk could also double today as a side table next to a bed or sofa.
