Shanxi Low Carved Chest
Shanxi, circa 1900
This beautiful little chest would have served for storing valuables in Shanxi province, where it originated. Made from pine, it is still in its original finish, now heavily worn. Four small drawers sit above a fixed panel with carved detail, whilst the bottom apron has similar decoration in open carving. Removing the drawers gives access to the 'secret' storage area below, which would have been used to hold more valuable items. The dimensions make this piece ideal as a little TV stand, or as a narrow coffee table.
