Shanxi Carved Elm Bench
Shanxi, circa 1870
This narrow bench could be used for occasional seating or perhaps at the end of a bed. It is in a classic Chinese style, with A-frame legs supported by a single stretcher, fitting into the thick elm seat with mortise and tenon joints. At the top of each leg at the front and backis a carved cloud spandrel. the original black lacquer finish is still visible in places, but has now largely worn to the more natural elm wood beneath, particularly on the seat surface.
