Seven Drawer Elm Coffer
Shanxi, circa 1880
This old coffer is in its original black finish, now worn on the drawers and particularly around the edges of the top extended surface. The three upper drawers have a simple moulding around the ring handles that add a decorative element to an otherwise streamlined design. The four drawers below were quite possibly added at a later date, with the space behind what were once fixed panels originally accessible only by removing the drawers above. Ideal today as a console table, with handy storage space inside.
