Reed Hat Box
Shanxi, circa 1920
These old circular shaped boxes are from Shanxi province in central China and were used as hat boxes. They are made from woven reed with wooden banding around the centre, painted with flowers. Each one is hinged at the back with traditional ring hinges and has a simple brass clasp on the front for fastening. The image shown is an example only. Each box is similar in size but designs vary slightly.
