Red Lacquer Shanxi Wedding Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1860
This beautiful cabinet in red lacquer is of a kind presented as part of a bride's dowry along with contents of fine fabrics and other gifts. It was produced in Shanxi province in central China - a region well known for the quality of its lacquered and painted furniture. The doors would have been decorated in bright gold leaf and, though largely worn, traces of the gold are still visible, as well as the darker base beneath them. The design shows a scene of various figures in the grounds of a traditional home. The shaped metal hardware is also old. The doors are mounted on simple wooden dowels rather than metal hinges, allowing a larger, uninterrupted surface for the decoration. With two removable shelves inside and in a highly original condition, the cabinet would make a striking accent piece in any bedroom or living space.
