Antique Red Lacquer Shanxi Cabinet
Shanxi, circa 1880
This old red lacquer cabinet from Shanxi province oozes character, with a wonderful patina and sense of history. It was produced in the late 19th century and is in a style that is typical of the beautiful lacquered furniture of the skilled carpenters of the region. The red lacquer is original, now worn and crackled in parts but still quite vibrant in colour. It is decorated with gilding - a technique know as 'miao jin' in China- showing figures against a traditional landscape. It is unusual to find an antique cabinet like this with the original decoration, as so often this has been retouched or completely repainted. While largely worn to the darker base below, the gold is still intact in parts and gives a real authenticity and character to the cabinet. The heavy brass hardware is also original. The cabinet has a single removable shelf inside, along with a removable board that hides the compartment behind the bottom panel.
