Red Lacquer Two Door Grain Cabinet
Qinghai, circa 1880
This striking cabinet is from Qinghai in western China and the finish is original, now faded to less vivid, vibrant colours than when it was first made. Produced as a storage chest to hold grain, the doors have been added using what were once fixed panels, making the chest more useful today as a sideboard. The doors are framed with moulded carvings showing flowers, picked out against the red background. The single shelf inside is removable.
