Red Lacquer Painted Large Sideboard
Mongolia, circa 1900
The bright blues, reds and creams on this beautiful sideboard are particularly striking, even though they have faded since it was first produced. The sideboard is in a style distinctive of furniture from Mongolia, with wonderful paintings of various flora and fauna. The animals appear to include a pair of herons, symbolising purity and long life, as well as a lion and a tiger - both for protection. The carved apron at the bottom is still intact, finished in blues and greens, and removable shelves have been added inside. Now fairly rare, this is a beautiful example of painted Mongolian furniture.
