Pair of Red Lacquer Opera Chests
Shanxi, circa 1890
This lovely pair of blanket chests in red lacquer were originally used by a Chinese opera troupe to hold costumes and props as they travelled around Shanxi province. The wonderfully detailed monochrome paintings on the front of each one depict scenes from the operas they would have performed, with various characters shown standing or seated. The brass clasps on the trunks are new, replacing the original lost hardware. With useful storage space inside these would be perfect as bedside tables.
