Red Lacquer Painted Blanket Box
Qinghai, circa 1900
This quaint red lacquer storage box comes from Qinghai province in western China. The paintings are original, still very clear although quite worn and faded over the years. They depict a Golden Pheasant (a symbol of nobility) stood amongst Chrysanthemums (symbolising long life), suggesting that the chest once belonged to someone of high rank. Ideal today for storing anything from bedding or linens to kids' toys or clothing.
