Red Lacquer Mid Armoire with Butterflies
Shanxi, circa 1850
This lovely red lacquer cabinet still has its original door hardware and decorative gold paintings (known in Chinese as 'miao jin'). The paintings are now quite faded but the pattern, showing fluttering butterflies - a symbol for long life and marital happiness - can still be made out against the red lacquer. Other than the beautiful paintings, the style of the cabinet is quite plain, with an extended lid and doors mounted on traditional wooden dowel hinges. There is a single removable shelf inside. It is rare to find a Shanxi armoire like this with old paintings and hardware, and with its size being slightly smaller than most similar pieces, this one would fit perfectly into many a modern setting for general storage.
