Red Lacquer Four Drawer Coffer
Gansu, circa 1850
The now worn dark red lacquer finish on this old coffer is original, as is the hardware on the upper drawers. The bottom drawer has been added using the original fixed panel. When the chest was made this section would have provided a secure area, accessible only by removing the drawer above, which could be locked in place with a circular brass plate. This plate is no longer in place, but traces of where it would have been fitted are still visible. The coffer is from the western province of Gansu and has a wonderful patina - the red lacquer worn in parts to show the dark wood beneath.
