Red Lacquer Cabinet with Butterflies
Shanxi, circa 1900
This beautiful, brightly lacquered cabinet is highly typical of the decorative furniture produced in Shanxi province in central China. The thick red lacquer finish is original, but has been given a new lift with a shiny varnish. The front of the cabinet is decorated with butterflies in gold and circular floral patterns on the bottom apron, now worn and faded but still clearly visible. The outer frames show a geometric pattern in gold that is often seen on Shanxi furniture. the small, decorative hardware is old, though possibly not original. The single removable shelf inside is newly added and there is also a removable board over the bottom section, providing a hidden compartment with extra storage space. The cabinet is a nice size to use for bottles and glasses or for bedroom storage, with a rich red finish that will add warmth and colour to its surroundings.
