Red Lacquer Oriental Altar Table
Shanxi, circa 1900
Smaller than most Chinese altar tables, which typically extend over two metres or more, this one is nicely sized as a console table in a modern space. Originally in a reddish brown, it has been refinished in distressed red on the legs and apron, with the pine top in a darker brown. The top of each leg at the front and back is headed by cloud shaped spandrels and the panels between each set of legs show open carvings of flowers. Perfect today as a display table or placed behind a sofa.
