Qinghai Red Two Door Trunk
Qinghai, circa 1900
When it was first made this two door trunk was designed to sit on top of a much larger matching cabinet. At some point over the last hundred years or so it has been separated from the bottom cabinet, and today would work well as a little side cabinet or as a small stand for a television. It originates from Qinghai in the far west of China and still has its old red lacquer finish. The style is very plain and box like, with the heavy brass hardware (also original) being the only decorative element. As was the case with most furniture from Qinghai, the doors are set centrally with a fixed panel either side, rather than on the outer frames of the cabinet.
