Qinghai Painted Blanket Trunk
Qinghai, circa 1860
Most of the furniture from Qinghai province in western China was finished in either red or black lacquer, decorated with brightly coloured paintings of flowers or prized possessions. This beautiful chest would most likely have been given as part of a wedding dowry, along with the silks and clothing it contained inside. The paintings on the front are original and still clear though worn - the various butterflies being symbols for marital happiness. The finish is original - the black lacquer now crackled and severely worn in places, while the old hardware has been recently replaced. Great at the end of a bed.
