Panelled Sideboard with Carved Detail
Shanxi, circa 1880
This highly striking sideboard still has its original lacquer, the oranges and reds still vibrant though less vivid than they once were. The style, with drawers and doors set into rounded frames, is quite typical of furniture from Shanxi province. What makes this sideboard particularly special are the wonderful open carvings on the spandrels and bottom apron, which is split into three sections. Each carving shows a lovely floral pattern in sage green, with a single flower picked out in cream at the top of each spandrel. With impressive proportions at over two metres wide, this would be a realy statement piece as a dining room sideboard or for storage in a living room. There is a single removable shelf inside the central section.
