Panelled Pine Storage Coffer
Gansu, circa 1900
This old pine sideboard still has its old fastening plate on the top frame, once used to lock a removable panel in the top. This panel would originally have been the only way to access the interior and has now been sealed, with doors added instead using the front panels. The sideboard was made to serve as a storage coffer in Gansu province, hiding away the owner's money and valuables. It is in a robust, solid design that was functional, though the panelled doors and sides add a lovely decorative element. The distressed, pale blue matt finish is new, adding an interesting, fresh look to this old piece.
