Pair of Square Elm Stools
Shanxi, circa 1900
This simple pair of square stools are from Shanxi province and are made from elm - the most common wood used for furniture in northern China. Once in a dark lacquer, the colour has worn and faded over the years to reveal the more natural wood colour. The stools are in the highly distinctive design of so many similar pieces from China, with curved 'horse hoof' shaped feet, 'S' shaped stretchers and waisted seats. Great today for occasional seating or used as side tables. Sold as a pair, the price shown is for the two stools.
