Pair of Shandong Horseshoe Chairs
Shandong, circa 1900
This rustic styled pair of chairs are from Shandong province in northeast China. They are made from willow, a very supple material that allows the curved top rail and arms to be produced from a single shaped piece of wood. The backrest of each chair is decorated with relief carving showing a deer - a Chinese symbol for longevity. The front spandrels and apron, as well as the rear arm posts, are also carved to add a more decorative look. Once in a dark, black lacquer, the finish has worn through use, particularly on the seat, front of the arms and footrest, to give a real character and sense of a life lived. The chairs are quite narrow compared to the more grand horseshoe chairs that were used in court or in higher levels of society and have a more provincial look. Sold as a pair the price shown is for the two chairs.
