Pair of Red and Gold Painted Chests
Qingha, circa 1900
This beautiful pair of blanket chests are from the western province of Qingha. They are in their original red lacquer finish, still with the old paintings in black and gold. The gold has largely worn away to show the black base below, but the details can still be picked out. On one trunk they show a scholar or teacher with his young students, giving a clue to the occupation of the original owner. The paintings on the second trunk are less clear but appear to show a female, seated figure with children at either side. The trunks then were perhaps made for a husband and wife. Perfect to use as tables either side of a bed or sofa, with useful storage space inside, the trunks are sold as a pair. The price shown is for the two trunks.
