Pair of Painted Trunks with Stands
Gansu, circa 1900
This beautiful pair of blanket boxes date from the early 20th century and were made in Gansu province in the west of China. The wooden stands that they sit on are newly made, but the chests are otherwise in fairly original condition, with the old paintings on the front, old hardware and red lacquer (sealed with a new varnish). The paintings in cream and green depict various flowers including peonies as a symbol of status. The chests are made from pine, with the interiors finished in a dark brown. It's nice to find a pair like this still together and today they would work wonderfully as bedside tables. Sold as a pair, the price shown is for both trunks.
