Pair of Natural Elm Yoke Back Chairs
Shanxi, circa 1860
With five curved, rounded stiles rather than a single, wider backrest, these chairs have a slightly more western appearance than other chairs of the same period. The 'yoke-back' shape of the headrests though is distinctively Chinese, along with the delicate front stretchers with S shaped curves and rounded supports. These continue down along the front legs of each chair, beautifully carved down to the footrests. The chairs are made from elm, with rattan covered seat panels set within wide frames. Sold as a pair, the price shown is for the two chairs.
