Pair of Narrow Suzhou Stools
Suzhou, circa 1900
The rounded legs and triple layered detail on the seat and humpback stretchers of these stools make them quite unusual compared to the more standard square leg and waist design of Chinese stools. They are from the city of Suzhou in Jiangsu province and are beautifully made, with mitred tenon joints slotting perfectly into the rounded frames and a central panel fitted inside thick frames on the seat. The narrow proportions make them ideal as a pair of side tables as well as for occasional seating.
