Pair of Elm Tea Tables
Shanxi, circa 1860
These elegant side tables are made from elm wood, with the original dark finish worn on the base but showing off the beautiful grain of the material. The tables are from Shanxi province in central China, with the drawers and panels set within slightly rounded frames and legs and with two sets of lower shelves. The aprons at the front and on each side are beautifully carved in the form of highly stylised dragons. These stylised designs were allowed to be incorporated into the furniture of the elite and merchant classes, but it was strictly forbidden to use more realistic representations of dragons, which were reserved for the emperor only. With their slender proportions and simple elegance, these would make wonderful vase stands or lamp tables today. Sold as a pair, the price shown is for the two tables.
