Pair of Elm Southern Official Side Chairs
Shanxi, circa 1880
This simple pair of side chairs is in the 'Southern Official' style that developed later on in China's history, with the pronounced, curved top rails meeting the curved side posts rather than extending over them. They are nicely proportioned, with single stretchers and a curved front apron. The curved backrests are seen on almost all Chinese chairs of the period, designed to add comfort to the sitter. This pair still have the old black finish, now worn around the seat to show the attractive pattern on the elm wood underneath. One of the chairs has an old split in the backrest, which has been repaired at some stage long ago with an iron bracket. Sold as a pair, the price shown is for both chairs.
