Pair of Carved Wooden Panels
Anhui, circa 1880
This stunning pair of carved panels would once have formed part of the interior of a Chinese home. They are from Anhui province in southern China, an area renowned for the skill and finesse of its wood carvers, who would produce decorative architectural elements like these for the homes of wealthy merchants and government officials. This particular pair each show a vase of flowers in open and relief carving, decorated with a figure in robes, facing in opposite directions. Above and below the main panel are further relief carvings of various possessions - vases and bowls, along with branches of fruit trees. The carvings are wonderfully executed and well preserved, and the panels would make a beautiful wall decoration. Sold as a pair, the price is for the two panels.
