Pair of Carved Blue Lacquer Armchairs
Shanxi, circa 1900
This lovely pair of 'yoke-back' armchairs are highly decorated, with the end of each curved head rail being finished in a scroll pattern that is repeated at the end of each arm. The original lacquer has been replaced with a new, distressed blue that gives a more contemporary feel to the chairs, but otherwise they are in a highly original condition, with the beautiful carved elements in excellent condition. The back splat on each chair depicts a stylized swastika (a symbol for good fortune) at the top with a deer (representing longevity) below, each in open carving. There is further carving in the form of the spandrels at the top of each beautifully curved side post and on each apron below the seats. Sold as a pair, the price is for the two chairs. Please note that these chairs are reduced to clear as they have had some minor repairs after being damaged in transit.
