Pair of Blue Armchairs with Tea Table
Shanxi, circa 1900
This set of horseshoe armchairs and tea table dates from the early part of the 20th century and is from Shanxi province in central China. It is quite unusual to find a complete set these days, as so often the table gets separated from the chairs over the years. Each item here has been refinished in a distressed blue lacquer, but the delicate carving around the chair and table aprons, as well as the wonderful relief carvings on the chair backrests is still clear. The carvings show various figures in fine dress, as well as floral patterns below the chair seats. The scrolling pattern along the chair leg spandrels was a common motif during the Qing dynasty and is repeated on the side table.
